My company is a big sponsor for the Special Olympics chapter of Georgia. Through that relationship they offer employees the opportunity to volunteer at events around the Metro Atlanta area or even the state. I’m really blessed to work for a great company that allows employees to take time out of a “work” day to give back through volunteering within our community.
March is our company’s big push for community involvement/volunteering and they’ve called it “No Excuses” campaign. I like the slogan because we shouldn’t have an excuse to give back. That being said about 25 of my team members got to volunteer with the Dekalb County School’s students Special Olympics track and field events.
If you’ve ever watch the Olympics on tv, these Special Olympics pretty much did variations of all of it. There was an opening ceremony with a torch relay that I got to walk/jog with a buddy a quarter way around the track.
Then the games began. Variations of track and field events; springs, throwing events, awards and lots of celebration.
I have been a part of other Special Olympics volunteer events, but this one was very special to me as I ran track & field in high school and college so I love to see everyone be able to compete at all levels.
I encourage you now to see what volunteer opportunities are near you and sign up. The smiles and excite from the athletes made my day!
